I wrote one of the chapters in this book.
Welcome to my site. I am a professional genealogist specializing in tracing the lives of African Americans.
Please let me know how I may help you.
**********
Who were your ancestors? Were they slave or free before 1865? On the eve of the Civil War nearly half a million African Americans were free in the United States. Almost half this number lived in the Southern States. For instance, according to federal census records 2,098 free people of color resided in Alabama in 1860. Where did your ancestors live? How did they earn a living? Did they serve in the military? These are some of the questions you may have asked yourself about your ancestors.
Federal and state census records, birth, marriage, death, probate, military, and other types of records, such as those of the Freedmen's Bureau, Freedman's Savings and Trust Company (Freedman's Bank), Southern Claims Commission, and Congressional hearings are among the resources I will examine to find answers to your questions. I will prepare reports and charts and organize all those newspaper clippings that you have accumulated over the years.
If you would like to publish your family history on the Web or share your history with friends and family on CDs, please contact me for details.
