Death records are important documents family historians use to trace the lives of their ancestors. In Alabama, for instance, it was not until 1908 that death records were filed statewide. What resources are available prior to statewide requirements for filing such records? Newspapers, sacramental registers, and sexton reports, such as those in Mobile, are among the sources genealogists and historians examine to find death information. These records may include, for example, the name of the deceased, age, color, cause of death, graveyard where buried, place of birth, and occupation. I have posted three databases (on this site) that contain some of the information found in Mobile sexton reports, church registers, and newspapers.
