Did your African American ancestors remain in the south after the Civil War or did they move to another part of the country? Here is another example from the U. S. Serial Set, a set of records that I previously mentioned on my Facebook page and my website. Some African Americans testified before a Senate committee about African Americans who left the south. For example, Wiley Lowerey, age 47, indicated that in 1879 he lived in Kinston, Lenoir County, North Carolina, that he was not formerly a slave, that he was born free, that his parents were never slaves, and that his grandfather had also been a free person of color, and that he owned property.
