When beginning work with a new client I find that I can more economically and more successfully serve that client if I first review the information which he has gathered to date on the family unit for which I would be searching. I can extract all possible, usable clues and prepare a research program that is tailored to the needs of the client, one that builds upon the work already done without needless duplication. Should this approach meet with your approval, you should provide photocopies of all materials you have acquired that relate to this problem. Your summary of the problem helps me to understand your goals. What specific information would you like to learn about your ancestors? Your family group sheets and ancestors charts provide a valuable overview of the family. Include the basic census data, as much as you have had the opportunity to extract. If your census notes include identification of neighbors, this detail would be helpful. Any additional detail you may be able to supply regarding known or suspected relatives or associates of these families, church affiliation, occupations, other places of residence, unusual family names or unique personal characteristics will also provide clues for use as we proceed to ferret out the genealogical evidence you need. It goes without saying that all materials you supply will be held in confidentiality. None will be shared with anyone else unless you specifically request it.
Once research is initiated, you may be assured that all available resources will be exhausted to the fullest extent possible within the time limitations that are placed upon the project. All information supplied to you will be documented in accordance with professional historical standards. My research reports include both negative and positive results, as well as a listing of the resources that remain to be covered.
My fee for consultation, including phone conversations, email, research, computer data entry, and preparation of reports is -- Please contact me for my current rate. If photocopies of documents are provided, these will be billed at the rate charged by the repository where those records were found. Please advise if photocopies of documents are required. If necessary, microfilm may be borrowed; these will also be billed.
For a preliminary analysis and preparation of an individualized research program, an advance of -- Please contact me (six hours) is requested. Should the assignment run longer -- and that depends upon the extent of available material and the character of the problem involved -- then I would bill for the difference. Please be specific regarding time limitations. I need to know how many hours to work. All work is performed at the earliest possible date. Actual time for the completion of assignments fluctuates with demand and the complexities of the project. Please allow at least one month.
Perhaps I should add that I will make every effort to solve your research problems within the limitations that you impose. I cannot guarantee the results of the research.
